Annapurna Circuit

A Himalayan classic, crossing the Annapurna range via Thorong La at 5,416 m. From the wooded Marsyangdi Valley to the high plateaus of Manang and on to the arid landscapes of Mustang, this route retains the mountainous heart of the historic circuit, which has now been shortened at either end by the expansion of the road network.

On the trail

Thorong La, the highest point of the trek

At an altitude of 5,416 metres, the Thorong La Pass is the highest point and one of the most iconic sections of the Annapurna Circuit. Crossing it requires good acclimatisation and a long ascent to high altitude, which often begins before dawn.

Manang, in the heart of the Annapurnas

Situated at an altitude of around 3,540 m, Manang is a key stop on the trek. Surrounded by high peaks, the village is also an ideal place to spend a day acclimatising before continuing on to Thorong La.

Lake Tilicho

At an altitude of 4,919 metres, Lake Tilicho is one of the most spectacular sights on the trek. It is a sight that must be earned: access involves a challenging, high-altitude route with exposed sections, and acclimatisation must be taken seriously.

Before you go

  • The trek quickly gains elevation between Dharapani and Manang. The overnight stay in Ngawal and the acclimatization day in Manang are important before continuing above 4,000 m.
  • Manang High Route: Between Upper Pisang and Manang, take the route through Ghyaru and Ngawal rather than the valley floor—it’s more challenging, but offers much more spectacular views and is better for acclimatization.
  • Thorong La, 5,416 m — Crossing the pass is the most challenging part of the trek. The hike usually starts very early, with low temperatures and conditions that can change rapidly; do not attempt the crossing in bad weather or if you are experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness.
  • The development of the road has profoundly altered the historic route. This version starts in Dharapani and, in particular, follows the Pisang High Trail in order to focus on the most interesting sections for hiking.

D1Katmandhu → DharapaniTravel

D2Dharapani → ChameWalkingDIST16.3 kmGAIN+1,205 mLOSS−407 mMAX ALT.2,740 mEffort6/10

Hike up the Marsyangdi Valley through pine forests and mountain villages, with the first views of Manaslu and the Annapurnas. The ascent is steady, with no particular technical difficulties, but this stage begins to gain a significant amount of altitude.

D3Chame → Upper PisangWalkingDIST13.8 kmGAIN+944 mLOSS−318 mMAX ALT.3,317 mEffort6/10

Follow the Marsyangdi River through cliffs, forests and apple orchards before the valley opens out to reveal Annapurna II. The final climb to Upper Pisang is steeper, but is rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

D4Upper Pisang → Ghyaru → NgawalWalkingDIST10 kmGAIN+641 mLOSS−290 mMAX ALT.3,781 mEffort5/10

Take the spectacular Manang High Route, with a steep climb up to Ghyaru followed by a panoramic traverse with views of Annapurna II and III. The altitude makes this stage more challenging, despite the relatively short distance.

D5Ngawal → Braga → ManangWalkingDIST10.4 kmGAIN+177 mLOSS−299 mMAX ALT.3,731 mEffort4/10

Descend gradually towards Braga and its ancient monastery, then head to Manang, which lies opposite Gangapurna and its glacier. A fairly easy stage, ideal for recovering whilst continuing to acclimatise.

D6Acclimatation à ManangRest

Enjoy a day of acclimatisation with a hike to Gangapurna Lake or, for the more experienced, on to Ice Lake at around 4,600 m. The climb to Ice Lake is challenging, but offers one of the most stunning panoramic views of the Annapurna range.

D7Manang → Yak KharkaWalkingDIST10.4 kmGAIN+538 mLOSS−52 mMAX ALT.4,035 mEffort5/10

Leave the last large villages behind and head into more arid, open countryside, amongst alpine pastures and views of the Chulu range. The climb is gradual, but the altitude becomes more noticeable as you approach 4,000 metres.

D8Yak Kharka → Thorong PhediWalkingDIST7.1 kmGAIN+626 mLOSS−122 mMAX ALT.4,554 mEffort4/10

Continue through an almost entirely rocky landscape to the foot of Thorong La. The stage is short, but some sections on unstable slopes require caution, and the altitude means you’ll have to keep a slow pace.

D9Thorong Phedi → Thorong La → MuktinathWalkingDIST14.3 kmGAIN+866 mLOSS−1,642 mMAX ALT.5,407 mEffort9/10

Climb Thorong La at 5,416 m, the highest point of the trek, in a high-mountain landscape dominated by the Annapurnas and the Chulu range. This is the most demanding day, with an early start, a long climb to high altitude, followed by a descent of over 1,600 m to Muktinath.

D10Muktinath → Jharkot / Jhong → Kagbeni → JomsomWalkingDIST21.9 kmGAIN+177 mLOSS−1,185 mMAX ALT.3,756 mEffort8/10

Pass through the traditional villages of Jharkot and Jhong before reaching Kagbeni, at the gateway to Upper Mustang. The route then follows the wide Kali Gandaki valley down to Jomsom; the terrain is easy, but the winds can become strong by late morning.

D11Jomsom → PokharaTravel

From Jomsom, you can travel to Pokhara by plane or by road. Flights take around 20 minutes but are highly weather-dependent and are usually operated in the morning. You can also reach Pokhara by bus or jeep in a long day’s journey via Beni.

Variations and extensions
01/Tilicho Lake
Extension

At an elevation of 4,919 meters, Lake Tilicho is one of the most spectacular detours on the Annapurna Circuit. It’s a sight worth the effort: access requires a challenging, high-altitude route with exposed sections, and acclimatization must be taken seriously.

How to get there

Road conditions leading to the start of the circuit are highly variable, particularly because of the heavy monsoon rainfall that causes landslides.

To the trailhead

Local bus Kathmandu → Besisahar, then shared jeep → Dharapani

This is the most economical and common option for independent trekkers. Allow around 6–8 hours to Besisahar, then 4–5 hours by jeep on the track to Dharapani. Leave Kathmandu early to have a chance of making both connections on the same day.

Shared jeep Kathmandu → Dharapani
Recommended

Some agencies or operators arrange vehicles that continue to Dharapani, sometimes with a change in Besisahar. It is more expensive than the bus but simpler and generally faster.

Private jeep Kathmandu → Dharapani

The most comfortable and flexible option, particularly worthwhile for groups. The journey can be completed in one long day, around 9–11 hours depending on road conditions and traffic. Prices advertised in 2026 are around €150 to €200 per vehicle.

From the finish

Jomsom → Pokhara flight

The fastest option, with a flight of around 20–25 minutes. Flights generally operate early in the morning, before winds strengthen in the Kali Gandaki Valley. They are highly weather-dependent and are regularly suspended during the monsoon or winter.

Jomsom → Pokhara by bus or jeep
Recommended

Expect a long day on the road, often around 8–10 hours or more depending on track conditions. It is cheaper and avoids reliance on flights, but the journey can be slow and bumpy, with possible disruptions after heavy rain.

To Kathmandu – bus or flight

Pokhara is generally used as an intermediate stop. From there, allow around 25 minutes by air or a long bus journey to Kathmandu.

When to go

The two most favourable periods run from March to May and from October to November. Between June and September, the monsoon mainly affects the lower access routes, where rain makes the paths and tracks treacherous; Upper Mustang may remain drier, though this does not guarantee access to the trek route. In winter, the cold, snow and the closure of certain lodges make crossing the Thorong La more difficult.
