On the trail

Magical panoramic views

As you gain altitude, the landscape opens up to reveal a spectacular panorama. From the Lower Viewpoint, the peaks of Machapuchare, South Annapurna and Hiunchuli suddenly seem very close, towering over the deep valleys and ridges of the Himalayas.

Nature at its best

In the hills of Mardi Himal, it is not uncommon to come across flocks of sheep roaming freely in the high-altitude pastures. It is a simple, authentic scene that serves as a reminder that these Himalayan landscapes are also home to life and pastoral traditions.

The colourful teahouses in the hamlets

Throughout the trek, small hamlets dot the route, with their colourful teahouses welcoming walkers. Simple and cosy, they offer a friendly place to stop and give the trail a unique atmosphere, blending local life with Himalayan landscapes.

Before you go

  • Before departing from Pokhara, you must apply for and pay for the ACAP permit.
  • The guide is officially required; inspections reported in 2025 and 2026 sometimes allowed for autonomy without granting an exemption.
  • Access to the start and end of the trek is fairly easy and close to Pokhara.
  • Be aware of the capacity limits at the tea houses during peak season.

The day begins with a drive of about 45 minutes to 1 hour from Pokhara to Kande. The trail then passes through Australian Camp, Pothana and Pitam Deurali, before heading deep into the forest. A lovely first stage, with some panoramic views already and steps that can be a bit slippery after the rain.

D2Forest Camp → High CampWalkingDIST7.7 kmGAIN+1,154 mLOSS−74 mMAX ALT.3,551 mEffort4/10

The climb continues at a leisurely pace through the forest, then the landscape gradually opens up around Low Camp and Badal Danda. The ridge offers superb views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre. The elevation gain is considerable: it’s best to take your time to make the most of the day.

D3High Camp → Lower Viewpoint → Low CampWalkingDIST9.8 kmGAIN+516 mLOSS−1,050 mMAX ALT.3,987 mEffort5/10

Today is all about the stunning panoramic views. By setting off early, you’ll get more out of the ridge before the clouds roll in. Hoarfrost or snow may make some sections slippery. The suggested route takes you to the ‘Lower Viewpoint’, then back down to Low Camp, but if you’re feeling up to it, you can carry on to base camp.

D4Low Camp → SidhingWalkingDIST3.8 kmGAIN+38 mLOSS−1,144 mMAX ALT.2,990 mEffort2/10

The descent to Sidhing is short but particularly steep. The steps and tree roots require a bit of care, especially if the ground is wet. From the village, it takes a further 2 to 3 hours by shared 4×4 taxi to reach Pokhara, depending on road conditions.

How to get there

The trek usually begins with a taxi ride from Pokhara to Kande, which takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. After the descent, the return trip from Sidhing is by shared or private jeep, with a 2- to 3-hour drive back to Pokhara.

To the trailhead

Taxi from Pokhara to Kande
Recommended

From Pokhara, a taxi takes about 45 to 60 minutes to reach Kande. This is the easiest way to leave early with your backpack; it’s best to book the day before through your hotel or a local driver.

From the finish

Jeep Sidhing → Pokhara
Recommended

Le retour suit immédiatement la descente Low Camp–Sidhing et reste inclus dans la quatrième journée. Confirmer le véhicule avant le trek; l’état de la piste peut modifier le temps de trajet.

PermitRequired
GuideRequired

An ACAP permit is required. Officially, the Nepal Tourism Board lists Mardi Himal among the routes that require a licensed guide and a TIMS permit issued by an agency. In practice, independent trekkers have recently reported being checked only for the ACAP permit, with no request for a guide or TIMS. Independent trekking therefore often seems possible, but it remains at odds with the official rule, and the level of enforcement may vary.

Accommodation & meals

Tea houses / lodges
Main option

The tea houses at Forest Camp, Low Camp, Badal Danda, and High Camp offer simple but adequate accommodations for the night. The rooms are generally not heated, so guests tend to gather in the common room to eat meals and stay warm. At High Camp, accommodations are more limited; it’s best to check in advance to make sure the lodge is open and that a bed is available.

When to go

April, October and November are the most reliable times to visit. March, May and September are still viable options but more variable. From June to August, the monsoon brings rain, mud, leeches, reduced visibility and poor road access. In winter, cold weather, snow or ice can make the ridge impassable and some lodges close. Monsoon dates and snow conditions vary: check the weather, trail conditions and lodge opening times just before setting off.

Typical trends, not a forecast. Check the weather and official opening dates before departure.
